The caption refers to the punchline of a local 1970s TV ad for C&C brown lemonade (for those of you who are too far away, or too young to remember).
The sculpture is an old fashioned bottle stopper, commemorating the glass & bottling businesses that used to be in the area.
Oh yes, brown lemonade... a peculiarly Northern Irish brew. It's exactly like ordinary "white" lemonade (or Sprite/7Up), but coloured brown.
Remember it well...

ReplyDeleteIt is not exactly like white lemonade!it has a more rounded bouquet and hints of toasted jigsaw. Goes well with battered sausage.
ReplyDeleteTook my young, non beer-drinking, brother to a pub in Leeds in the mid 80s. He asked for "a wee vodka and white" - it was pricier than he expected, flatter, and slightly yellow. He initially thought they had misunderstood "wee", but it wasn't that bad, quite.
DeleteNot knowing about brown lemonade (traditional mixer for dark rum) they had assumed that the "white" meant white WINE....
