Carnmoney Old Cemetery

I was at this cemetery today interring the ashes of an uncle in the same grave as his parents - my grandparents. Until today, I never knew where their grave was, as the last burial there was sixty years ago.

The large cross is the Cross of Sacrifice - a memorial erected in honour of the dead from the First World War. Cave Hill, one of Belfast's iconinc landmarks is on the skyline in the centre of the photo.

  1. Good photo. I've had an interesting time trying to track down the other Cross of Sacrifice crosses in Northern Ireland after discovering them in Carnmoney, Dundonald, Milltown and the City Cemeteries. Not sure if there are any more here, but I even found one in Dundee and Arbroath.

  2. They were erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and are placed in cemeteries with more that 40 war graves. I presume they might haave a list, although their website doesn't seem to have a searchable list.
